According to the recent news, Astronomers have spied a star’s swan song as it is shredded by a black hole. Researchers suspect that the star wandered too close to the black hole and got sucked in by the huge gravitational forces. The star’s final moments sent a flash of radiation hurtling towards Earth.

The energy burst is still visible by telescope more than two-and-a-half months later, the researchers said. The Swift spacecraft constantly scans the skies for bursts of radiation, notifying astronomers when it locates a potential flare. These bursts usually indicate the implosion of an ageing star, which produces a single, quick blast of energy. But this event first spotted on 28 March 2011 and designated Sw 1644+57, does not have the marks of an imploding sun.

What intrigued the researchers about this gamma ray burst is that it flared up four times over a period of four hours. Astrophysicist Dr Andrew Levan from the University of Warwick, and his colleagues suspected that they were looking at a very different sort of galactic event; one where a passing star got sucked into a black hole.

Black holes are thought to reside at the centers of most major galaxies. Some black holes are surrounded by matter in the form of gas; light is emitted when the gas is dragged into the hole. However, the centers of most galaxies are devoid of gas and so are invisible from Earth.

These black holes only become visible when an object such as a star is pulled in. If this happens, the star becomes elongated, first spreading out to form a “banana shape” before its inner edge – orbiting faster than the outer edge – pulls the star into a disc-shape that wraps itself around the hole.

As material drops into the black hole it becomes compressed and releases radiation that is usually visible from Earth for a month or so. Events like these, termed mini-quasars, are incredibly rare – researchers expect one every hundred million years in any one galaxy.

The researchers used some of most powerful ground-based and space-based observatories – the Hubble Space Telescope, the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Gemini and Keck Telescopes.

Speaking on Obesity in 2011, on the first day of the two-day national conference, the expert said that obesity was described in the ancient Indian texts such as the ‘Charak Samhita’. The health condition was emerging as a serious threat with 24 million people in India being obese.

”The Indian population is at a special risk because of the tendency to develop central obesity. The ‘thin fat Asian Indian phenotype’ is now well established,” said Joshi adding that Indians had a higher proportion of fat in their body composition and more so in the abdominal area. Obesity kills more people than AIDS and often underlines problems such as diabetes and heart diseases. It is also associated with accelerated ageing,” he added.

Listing sedentary lifestyle, watching of too much TV, use of internet and other gadgets of comfort as contributing factors in the rise of obesity among Indian children, Joshi underlined the need for taking proper nutrition, brisk walks, proper yogic practices and de-stressing as ways in managing obesity.

Focusing on obesity as “the emerging Indian epidemic”, the inaugural session was opened by Parimal Trivedi, Vice Chancellor of Gujarat University, and Mrunalini Devi Puar, of the Maharaja Sayajirao University. Speaking on the occasion, Parimal Trivedi said that case studies in obesity needed to focus on age, food habits, lifestyle and human behaviour too. Mrunalini Puar emphasized on the need to interlink nutrition and obesity and said that nutrition along with yogic practices should be made the mainstay in controlling obesity. Khaleej Times

Just like hoodia, it is a new ingredient introduce in the market. Manufacturer is indeed working hard not just to earn money, but also to help people get a quick weight fix.

The term hoodia is a herbal supplement that comes from a plant called the hoodia gordonii. It primarily grows in Africa’s dessert plains including Namibia, Angola, and South Africa. It is said it can effectively curb down appetite, which reduces the weight in the long run. Since it is still new hoodia side effects is still unknown. That is why it is still important to take a lot of precautions when using the product.

We’ve all heard the story of how each of us has a little angel and a little devil on our shoulders, whispering into our ear what to do, and trying to convince us to go one way or the other. From what the recently ever-popular Angel Therapy, the part about the angel is true – each of us has one, if not actually more guardian angels and, for us to have the life we’ve always dreamed of, suffice it if we listen to what they’re telling us.

Angel Therapy already has a loyal following in the US, with other countries coming up close. There are also Angel Therapy Practitioners, meaning people who have the skill to connect with our angels, either on their own, thanks to some supernatural sense we lack, or with the help of the angel of a dead person, and who are able to tell us what to do. Most of them have learned the hard way what ignoring one’s angel can mean and this is why, they say, they have decided not to let others make the same mistake they made.

“Angels have soft, feathery wings. They always talk about, and act from, love. Everyone has guardian angels who guide and protect us. The angels can’t force their help on us, however, since we have free will. We must ask for their help. Evil people don’t listen to their angels: their angels stand by with ‘wings tied’ unable to intervene because God created us with free will.” Mrs. Virtue tells Jones about how each of us has one or more guardian angels.

“You have to think of your angels as your team. You are never alone.” Sohini Patel, another Practitioner, advises Jones. In the end, even if it’s not really angels doing all this good for us and watching our back all the time, at least it’s good to think that we are never alone in life and that we deserve to be happy, Jones concludes.

Researchers are reporting the first scientific evidence that a hormone banned in sports can boost athletic performance. The improvement from human growth hormone was modest, and only in sprinting. It didn’t increase strength or fitness. Athletes likely to benefit are those in sprint events like running or swimming that require a burst of energy, and where a split second can decide the winner.

Human growth hormone, or HGH, is one of many substances banned by the Olympics and other sports even though there hasn’t been any good proof that it can enhance performance. Previous studies in athletes have been small and brief. The new research tested it in about 100 recreational athletes for two months. “This is the first demonstration that growth hormone improves performance and justifies its ban in sport,” said Dr. Ken Ho, who led the study at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney.

Human growth hormone is made by the pituitary gland and promotes growth of bone and other tissue. A manufactured version is available, but its use is restricted to certain conditions in children and adults, including short stature, growth hormone deficiency and wasting from AIDS.

The latest research involved 103 male and female recreational athletes between 18 and 40. For two months, they got injections of either growth hormone or salt water. Some of the men also got testosterone, which is also banned in sports and often used with growth hormone.

They lifted weights, jumped and rode exercise bikes to test their physical performance. Growth hormone didn’t improve strength, power or endurance, the researchers said. The only improvement was for sprinting on a bicycle, a 4 percent increase in sprint capacity compared to those who didn’t get the hormone. In men who also got testosterone shots, there was an 8 percent increase.

Said recipe is said to be as efficient as it’s completely devoid of all the things that poets love to write about: in short, it implies the wife has to be at least five years younger than the husband and smarter than him. At the same time, history of divorce downsizes chances of success, the BBC writes.

“They found that if the wife was five or more years older than her husband, they were more than three times more likely to divorce than if they were the same age. If the age gap is reversed, and the man is older than the woman, the odds of marital bliss are higher. Those who have never divorced fare better too. But couples in which one member has been through a divorce in the past are less stable than those in which both members are divorcees.” BBC writes of the findings of the latest study.

Based on that last detail, it would seem that Michael Douglas’ marriage to Catherine Zeta Jones has less chances of success than that of Beyonce and Jay-Z. While it respects the age and education gap criteria, Douglas is a one-time divorcee. However, researchers insist people look for partners “on the basis of love, physical attraction, similarity of taste, beliefs and attitudes, and shared values.” Still, some factors, such as those mentioned above, can help reduce the rate of divorce.

The findings come from a study of 6,000 British civil servants, published online in the European Heart Journal. After accounting for known heart risk factors such as smoking, doctors found those who worked three to four hours of overtime a day ran a 60% higher risk. Experts said the findings highlighted the importance of work-life balance.

Overall, there were 369 cases where people suffered heart disease that caused death, had a heart attack or developed angina. And the number of hours spent working overtime appeared to be strongly linked in many cases. The researchers said there could be a number of explanations for this.

People who spend more time at work have less time to exercise, relax and unwind. They may also be more stressed, anxious, or have depression. A career-minded person will also tend to be a “Type A” personality who is highly driven, aggressive or irritable, they say.

Lead researcher Mianna Virtanen, an epidemiologist at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health in Helsinki and University College London, said: “More research is needed before we can be confident that overtime work would cause coronary heart disease. Although the researchers showed a link between working more than three hours overtime every day and heart problems, the reasons for the increased risk weren’t clear. Until researchers understand how our working lives can affect the risk to our heart health, there are simple ways to look after your heart health at work, like taking a brisk walk at lunch, taking the stairs instead of the lift, or by swapping that biscuit for a piece of fruit.”

Differences in what you eat after exercise produce different effects on the body’s metabolism. The study follows up on several previous studies that demonstrate that many benefits of exercise are transient: one exercise session produces benefits to the body that taper off, generally within hours or a few days.

Senior study author, Jeffrey F. Horowitz of the University of Michigan (U-M) said that “many of the improvements in metabolic health associated with exercise stem largely from the most recent session of exercise, rather than from an increase in ‘fitness’ per se. But exercise doesn’t occur in a vacuum, and it is very important to look at both the effects of exercise and what you’re eating after exercise,” he added.

Specifically, the study found that exercise enhanced insulin sensitivity, particularly when meals eaten after the exercise session contained relatively low carbohydrate content. Enhanced insulin sensitivity means that it is easier for the body to take up sugar from the blood stream into tissues like muscles, where it can be stored or used as fuel. Impaired insulin sensitivity (i.e., “insulin resistance”) is a hallmark of Type II diabetes, as well as being a major risk factor for other chronic diseases, such as heart disease.

Despite all the health expert warnings of the risk of obesity, a new Japanese study warns that being very skinny is even more dangerous, and that slightly chubby people live longer.

The study was conducted by a health ministry team led by Tohoku University professor Ichiro Tsuji and covered 50,000 people between the ages of 40 and 79 over 12 years in the northern Japanese prefecture of Miyagi.

The study found that people who are a little overweight at age 40 live six to seven years longer than very thin people, whose average life expectancy was shorter by some five years than that of obese people.

The main reasons for the shorter lifespan of skinny people were believed to include their heightened vulnerability to diseases such as pneumonia and the fragility of their blood vessels.

According to the latest research, they suggested that Easter eggs and other chocolate can be good for you, as long as you eat only small amounts.

The study of over 19,000 people, published in the European Heart Journal, found those who ate half a bar a week had lower blood pressure. They also had a 39% lower risk of heart attacks and strokes. But, heart campaigners warned that too much chocolate is damaging because it has a lot of calories and saturated fat.

The study also looked at the chocolate consumption of middle-aged men and women over eight years. It compared the health of those who ate the most and least chocolate. The difference between these two groups was just 6 grams a day, equivalent to one small square of chocolate a day.

Dr Brian Buijsse, lead author of Institute of Human Nutrition said: “Our hypothesis was that because chocolate appears to have a pronounced effect on blood pressure, therefore chocolate consumption would lower the risk of strokes and heart attacks, with a stronger effect being seen for stroke.”

This is, in fact, what the study found. Those who ate more chocolate cut their risk of heart attacks by around a quarter, and of stroke by nearly half, compared with those who ate the least. But Dr Buijsse warned that it was important people ensured that eating chocolate did not increase their overall intake of calories or reduce their consumption of healthy foods. Small amounts of chocolate may help to prevent heart disease, but only if it replaces other energy-dense food, such as snacks, in order to keep body weight stable.
